Elul and Teshuvah

The word 'Teshuvah' echoes throughout the period of Elul and the Days of Awe.
The Torah portion read in synagogues during the month of Elul and the season of Teshuvah serves as a reminder of the importance of this mitzvah:
« … and shalt return unto the LORD thy G-OD, and hearken to His Voice… thou and thy children… that then the LORD thy G-OD will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the peoples,… » (Deuteronomy 30, 2-3).
These verses contain two distinct concepts: religious and national Teshuvah. The latter refers to the return to Israel, which will herald the redemption of the entire world.
At first glance, the meaning of the word 'Teshuvah' seems self-evident. On the surface, it means 'to turn away' from a transgression.
However, a broader conception of the concept of Teshuvah emerges in Jewish thought, and more specifically in Kabbalah...
