Shalom Rosenberg (1935 – 2023) was a religious Jewish thinker, Israeli, professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he was head of the department of Jewish thought. Rosenberg dealt mainly with the philosophy of religion, the relationship between religion and morality, the relationship between religion and science, and interpretation and hermeneutics in Jewish and general thought.
And thou shalt love!
In the parashah “VaEtchannane,” we read the well-known proclamation of emunah (faith): “Hear, O Israel.”
This verse, along with the following passage concerning the mitzvah of love, has become foundational to Judaism: “And you shall love the LORD your GOD...” has become the foundational text of Judaism. They accompany us in everything from the prayers we recite to the mezuzot in our homes.
Scripture defines the relationship between הקב״ה “the HOLY ONE, blessed be He” and human beings according to three “human” models. הקב״ה is regarded as the FATHER and as the KING. Hence the classic expression: “our FATHER, our KING.” To these first two models, our Sages and the Kabbalah have added a model of relationship that takes on a MATERNAL Aspect, with the SHEKHINAH, “the DIVINE PRESENCE.”
